Flow Headset

What is Flow?

Flow is a mental health treatment that employs a headset designed to deliver tDCS, a method that uses a gentle electrical current to stimulate specific areas of the brain, particularly the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). This area is often less active in individuals suffering from depression, and stimulating it can help improve mood regulation and reduce symptoms associated with depression.

Flow uses advanced neurostimulation technology that’s been clinically proven to help alleviate depression symptoms and help with mental wellness through non-invasive treatment.

Unlike traditional treatments, Flow’s technology is medication-free, with minimal side effects.

Flow works on one piece of the puzzle—neural activity—but not on all causes. It’s best seen as part of a broader treatment plan, often used alongside therapy, lifestyle changes, or medication. The app proposes lifestyle changes to combine with the stimulation to help create and maintain long lasting treatment success outcome.

Effectiveness and Research

Research has shown that Flow can be effective in treating depression. Clinical trials indicate that users of the Flow headset experience significant improvements in their depressive symptoms, with many reporting positive changes within three weeks of use. The largest clinical trial conducted in the UK and US found that patients using Flow for ten weeks were twice as likely to see their depression go into remission compared to those using a placebo.

How It Works

Usage: Patients typically use the Flow headset for about 30 minutes, five times a week for the first three weeks, after which the frequency may be reduced. The treatment can be monitored through a companion app that tracks mood, sleep, and other relevant metrics.

Integration with Therapy: Flow can be used alongside traditional treatments such as medication or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), providing a flexible option for those who may not respond well to conventional methods.

Patient Experiences

Many patients have reported positive outcomes from using Flow, expressing feelings of optimism and improved quality of life. The treatment has been particularly well-received by individuals who have not found relief through medication alone.

Conclusion

Flow represents a promising advancement in mental health treatment, offering a non-invasive, drug-free option for individuals struggling with depression. Its effectiveness, supported by clinical research and positive patient testimonials, makes it a valuable tool in the ongoing effort to address mental health challenges. If you or someone you know is considering Flow as a treatment option, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to determine its suitability.

The NHS use Flow to treat depression

The NHS have been using Flow in 6 NHS trusts across Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, West London, Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber, Norfolk and Suffolk and Practitioner Health.

GP Services, Northamptonshire

“Improvements in emotional well-being”

In March 2023 Flow was successfully offered to patients as an alternative to antidepressants or therapy at select GP practices in Northamptonshire.

Doctor Azhar Zafar, the NHS GP leading the trial said: “Flow has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from our patients, who have reported improvements in their emotional well-being, increased energy levels, and overall functioning.”

NHS Community Mental Health teams (CMHT) have been using Flow to support people in their mental health recovery.

“It is important to offer patients an evidenced-backed alternative to existing depression treatments (antidepressant medication and psychotherapies). The results support the use of Flow as a treatment option for CMHT patients with symptoms of depression.”
